On the occasion of International Workers’ Day, this May 1, we extend our warmest and most sincere greetings to all workers across the Central American region.
Today, we recognize the effort, dedication, and commitment that each of you contributes daily to the development of our societies. Your work is the driving force behind economic growth, innovation, and the collective well-being of our countries.
This day is not only an opportunity for celebration, but also a moment for reflection on the importance of continuing to promote fair, equitable, and dignified working conditions. We encourage everyone to keep building, with responsibility and enthusiasm, a future full of opportunities. Where work is a source of pride, personal development, and social progress.
Labor Law Considerations in Central America
As a general rule, in Central American countries such as Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama, May 1 is recognized as a mandatory national public holiday.
Under most labor law frameworks in the region:
- Employees are entitled to a paid day of rest.
- If an employee is required to work on this day, additional compensation is typically due, often equivalent to double the employee’s regular daily wage, although this may vary depending on the specific legislation of each country and any applicable collective bargaining agreements.
It is always advisable to verify the applicable labor regulations in each jurisdiction to ensure full compliance with these provisions.
We reiterate our appreciation to all workers across the region. Your efforts build the present and strengthen the future of Central America.
Happy International Worker’s Day!
